Kyoto, 1980. Leaning over a cluttered desk, Shigeru Miyamoto, 28, white shirt and skinny tie, polishes a sketch. Underneath the lead of his metallic pen, just a little mustachioed man slowly takes form on squared paper. Initially baptized Jumpman – “the person who jumps”, in English – his character will quickly be recognized worldwide as Mario, and can turn out to be Nintendo’s most worthwhile franchise.
